Gameplay overview

Strokes in, words out

Katakana Barabara hides its answer in plain sight. It takes a katakana word, splits it into the individual strokes that make up each character, and throws those strokes around the play area. Your job is to recognise the underlying word from the fragments and type it into the answer box.

Every round is timed at fifteen seconds plus five seconds for each character in the word, shown as a bar that turns red when it is nearly empty. Correct answers extend your 連続正解 streak, while the number of characters you have solved sits alongside it. A built-in katakana chart is one tap away if you need to check the difference between the lookalike characters.

Your objective

What you are trying to achieve

Work out which katakana word has been broken into loose strokes and type it before the timer empties. The score is a streak of consecutive correct answers, so one miss ends your run.

Every solved word makes the next one slightly easier to read, which is why a single long streak feels much better than a few scattered wins.

Beginner guide

Your first few minutes

The trick to Katakana Barabara is reading shape rather than fluency. These first-session habits get you from guessing to recognising.

  1. Start with short three-character words so you can study individual stroke shapes without pressure.
  2. Read the strokes by their rough position on screen rather than the order in which they appear.
  3. Learn the lookalike pairs ツ and シ and ソ and ン by the angle of their short dashes.
  4. Keep the カタカナ一覧 chart open until the full syllabary is in your memory.
  5. Watch the timer bar rather than the clock; a short pause is fine, two long pauses are not.

Advanced tips

Learn the strokes, not the words

  • Count the fragments before you try to read them: the number of scattered strokes usually tells you how many characters are in the hidden word.
  • Longer words are not automatically harder, because five and six character answers come with plenty of extra thinking time.
  • Drill the notorious pairs ツ and シ and ソ and ン by the direction of their dashes; once those stop fooling you, your streaks roughly double.

How the timer and scoring work

Fifteen seconds plus five per character

  • Each round starts with a limit of 15 seconds plus 5 seconds for every character in the answer.
  • Your streak (連続正解) is the score; one wrong answer resets it to zero.
  • The character counter tracks how many words you have solved in the session.
  • The timer bar turns red when roughly the last third of the round remains.

Our take

Why it is worth a try

Katakana Barabara is a genuinely original take on the typing game. By breaking characters into strokes it forces you to read kana the way a beginner learns them, shape by shape, and the timer makes that reading speed the real skill.

It is a niche idea, but the vocabulary is huge and grouped by theme (food, animals, vehicles, household objects), so the difficulty curve stays gentle. Students of Japanese will get the most from it, and anyone who enjoys fast word puzzles will find it moreish.

Who will enjoy it?

  • Ideal for students of Japanese who want to practise katakana reading under light pressure, and for puzzle players who like the decode-the-scrambled-thing format.

Frequently asked questions

Need a quick answer?

How do you play Katakana Barabara?
A katakana word is split into individual strokes and scattered on screen. Read the fragments, work out the word, type it in the answer box, and submit before the timer runs out.
What is the goal in Katakana Barabara?
Build the longest possible streak of correct answers. Your 連続正解 count is the score, and a single wrong answer resets it to zero.
Is Katakana Barabara good for learning Japanese?
Yes. Because it breaks characters into their strokes, it trains you to recognise katakana by shape, which is exactly how the syllabary is learned. A built-in katakana chart is available if you get stuck.
How much time do you get in Katakana Barabara?
Each round gives you 15 seconds plus 5 seconds for every character in the word, so longer answers come with more thinking time.
Can you play Katakana Barabara on mobile?
The game runs in a mobile browser, but it is played with a keyboard because you have to type the answer, so a desktop or laptop is more comfortable.
Is Katakana Barabara free to play?
